This course will prepare students for transition from student to professional by advancing their mastery of edible and ornamental horticultural crop principles and practices as they are driven by the interaction of cultivar genetics, plant physiology, and environmental influences; and by exploring issues of economic and environmental sustainability and production efficiencies on a global scale.

Defining Horticulture

The UGA Horticulture Department offers a variety of courses of interest to students pursing a degree in horticulture, those supplementing their degree with a horticulture minor or certificate, and those students just interested in learning about plants. Many students majoring or minoring in horticulture began with one class and got hooked on our hands-on approach to learning the scientific aspects of plant growth and management. Our students enjoy growing plants, taking field trips, and working on our farms. Below is a summary of the courses offered. In addition to characterizing plants by their taxonomic plant family, crop plants are also classified as either cool season or warm season , referring to the range of temperatures that are optimum for their growth. Examples of cool-season agronomic crops include wheat, oats, barley, rye, canola, and many forage grasses are called cool-season grasses, such as perennial ryegrass, timothy, orchardgrass, tall fescue, smooth bromegrass, and the bluegrasses. All plants have two names. They have a common name in layman's terms. In addition, taxonomy, the science of classification, gives plants a second scientific botanical name in Latin. It may seem silly to name plants in an ancient, dead language when there are perfectly fine common names for them, but pay particular attention to the botanical names because they help you unlock critical information about your chosen garden plants.
